The Vado Ligure plant

Lubricant mixing and packaging

Established in 1924 as a fuel storage and distribution depot, the plant now produces finished lubricants with a blending capacity of about 70,000 tons per year.

The plant uses two main types of raw materials:

Lubricant bases from ExxonMobil’s European and international network
Additives from Infineum S.r.l. and other chemical companies

Key features include:

Two blending methods: in-line and batch
Eight filling and packaging lines
Storage warehouses for raw materials and finished products

Flexibility and efficiency in production and logistics make the Vado Ligure plant a key facility for ExxonMobil in Europe.

Industrial, automotive and marine oils production

With advanced automation, cutting-edge production technologies, and strict quality control, the plant produces over 100 types of lubricants, both mineral and semi-synthetic. These are quickly manufactured, packaged in various formats, and shipped in over 400 versions.

The plant meets diverse market demands with a wide range of lubricants for hydraulic, engine, industrial, and marine applications.

Lloyd’s Register has certified the Vado Ligure plant with ISO 9001:2015 for its high-quality standards in lubricating oil production.

Safety, environment and local community

The Vado Ligure plant follows ExxonMobil’s Operational Integrity Management System (OIMS) for safety, health, and environmental protection. This ensures a systematic and rigorous approach to these areas, including community relations.

Esso Italiana actively participates in the local community by supporting conferences, events, and seminars organized by universities, schools, authorities, and industry associations. It also collaborates with the Municipality of Vado Ligure, the Industrial Association of Savona, the University Campus of Savona, and volunteer groups like the Italian Red Cross.

Educational contributions include school-work internships with the “Galileo Ferraris – Leon Pancaldo” Secondary School in Savona and participation in the “Fabbriche Aperte” initiative, fostering interaction between schools and businesses.

The plant also supports local health associations to ensure the continuity of their valuable work.

Perceptions and opinions of the local community

At the end of 2020, we commissioned a study to understand the perception of its Vado Ligure lubricant production plant and related economic, social, and environmental issues.

An accredited social and market research institute conducted the study, gathering insights from residents of Vado Ligure, Savona, and nearby municipalities, as well as local economic, institutional, and media representatives.

Esso fuels

In October 2023, Esso Italiana sold its fuel sector business to Italiana Petroli (IP) – api Group. This sale included refining, logistics, and fuel marketing activities. As part of a long-term branding agreement, Esso-branded service stations in Italy, already owned by third parties, continue to offer Esso’s quality fuels, marketing programs, loyalty cards, and services.

Globally, we are committed to the research and development of high-tech products and have created a new generation of high-performance metallocene catalysis polymers (Enable, Exceed, Exceedxp, Vistamax™) for innovative applications.
