Infineum Italia S.r.l., 50% owned by Esso Italiana S.r.l. and 50% by Shell Italia Holding S.p.A., operates a plant in Vado Ligure, which has been producing additives for lubricating oils and fuels since 1967. The plant has grown in volume, capacity, and importance, making it a significant player in the global industry of additives for lubricants.

Today, Infineum Italia employs about 240 people, with a large and qualified local workforce, and operates in a highly technological sector, strongly oriented towards quality and customer service, in an extremely competitive market that requires continuous updating of personnel and equipment.

Products

The additives produced in Vado Ligure are formulated to be blended with base oils to produce lubricants for a variety of applications. These include lubricating gasoline and diesel engines, two-stroke and marine engines, as well as automatic transmission fluids and universal oils for tractors.

These formulations contain up to 20 components:

• Developed to meet the specific application needs of each customer;
• Produced in highly automated plants that can respond to custom orders in less than 24 hours.

Each component provides specific characteristics, essential for the performance of the lubricant:

• Detergency
• Dispersion and suspension of carbonaceous deposits
• Prevention of oil oxidation
• Protection against wear of internal engine surfaces
• Stabilization and control of fluid viscosity.

Due to international regulations introducing increasingly stringent limits on fuel consumption and emissions for diesel and gasoline engines, and the resulting needs of engine and vehicle manufacturers, up to 20% of formulations are renewed each year, with continuous and significant efforts in product research and process updates.

Safety, Health, and Environment

Infineum’s corporate ethics have always been oriented towards sustainable development. This is reflected into particular attention to environmental protection and the safety and health of employees and other people working at the plant: fundamental values of the company.

Responsible management and prevention of potential risks, related protection and safety measures, incident prevention, continuous staff training, emergency drills, careful use of energy resources, and constant dialogue with the community have allowed the plant to maintain the highest levels of compatibility with the surrounding environment, consolidating Infineum Italia’s active role in the community.

As evidence of this, in 2001 Infineum Italia achieved the prestigious ISO 14001 environmental certification and OHSAS 18001 (since 2019 OHSAS 45001) safety certification issued by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), in addition to the ISO 9001 quality certification obtained in 1991.

Additionally, the Vado Ligure plant has adhered to the chemical industry’s voluntary Responsible Care® program for sustainable development, managed by Federchimica (the Italian Chemical Federation), since 1992.
