More than 800 undergraduate women from Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Arkansas recently gathered in Houston to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers, leadership development and innovation through a unique educational experience supported by ExxonMobil Baytown.
A $25,000 contribution from ExxonMobil to the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) helped bring the initiative to life during the South Central Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Undergraduate Leadership Institute. The program provided hands-on learning opportunities while demonstrating how innovation can help address real-world community challenges.
The program introduced participants to advanced recycling concepts through an educational webinar that highlighted innovation, sustainability, and emerging recycling technologies. Students developed and presented community-focused campaign ideas. The experience provided an opportunity to strengthen communication, problem-solving, and STEM-related skills while exploring how innovative thinking can help address real-world challenges.
“The Educational Advancement Foundation is committed to creating opportunities that prepare the next generation of informed leaders and changemakers,” said Shawn Simmons, South Central Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. “Participants gained practical knowledge, strengthened their leadership skills and developed innovative ideas they can bring back to their campuses and communities.”
Students also connected with leaders from industry, education and government to discuss STEM education, public policy and workforce development. Houston Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum and Baytown Mayor Charles Johnson shared perspectives on how education, innovation and community partnerships can help prepare future generations for evolving career opportunities.
EAF recognized exceptional advanced recycling projects and provided grants to chapters across the four participating states, further promoting STEM awareness, leadership, and community engagement. Winning chapters are:
- Texas:
- 1st Place: Houston Christian University, Sigma Theta chapter
- 2nd Place: Tarleton State University, Upsilon Omicron chapter
