A watering can and a one-dollar bill were just two of the unusual finds discovered when ExxonMobil Fawley and pupils from Blackfield Primary School in Blackfield took part in the Great British Spring Clean.

Equipped with gloves and litter pickers, the group scoured the mile-long Calshot Beach, picking up four large bags of rubbish while helping the scenic area of natural beauty stay clean and tidy for the local community.

The hardy group of volunteers included 12 pupils from Blackfield Primary School in Blackfield, Cllr Peter Armstrong, New Forest District Councillor for Hardley, Holbury and North Blackfield, and several ExxonMobil ambassadors.

“This was a fantastic experience for our Eco Team and a powerful example of community citizenship in action,” said Tariq Sasso, Executive Principal at Blackfield Primary and Nursery School.

“At Blackfield, one of our core values is responsibility, and this opportunity allowed our children to live that value in a real and meaningful way. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm they showed and the pride they took in protecting their local environment. We would also like to thank ExxonMobil Fawley for including them in such a memorable and worthwhile event.”

In addition to cleaning Calshot beach, ExxonMobil Fawley provided litter-picking kits to ten local schools to support their own Great British Spring Clean activities, helping extend the initiative across the wider Waterside community.

Participating schools included Blackfield Primary School, Cadland Primary School, Fawley Infant School, Hythe Primary School, Manor Infant School, Orchard Infant School, Orchard Junior School, Waterside Primary School, Wildground Infant School, and Wildground Junior School.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside ExxonMobil Fawley to deliver this important litter-picking campaign,” said Councillor Armstrong.

“The beach clean was a brilliant way to bring people together to take positive action. We are extremely grateful, and hope this encourages others to play their part in looking after the community.”

Richard Rastall, Fawley Site Safety, Security, Health and Environment Manager said: “By taking part in the Great British Spring Clean, we wanted to give back to the local area in a meaningful and practical way that directly impacts the wellbeing of the community which we serve. With so many of our own employees and contractors living in the area, it felt especially meaningful to play a part in giving this much-loved beach a little extra care.”

Richard added: We would like to thank everyone who took part, especially the children, who were brilliant cleaners and set an outstanding example for everyone involved.”
