Next generation apprentice follows in father's footsteps at ExxonMobil Fawley

In a remarkable coincidence, Mitchell McPhee, alongside 10 other apprentices, joined the petrochemical complex on the very same day his father, Andy McPhee, was celebrating 40 years in service.

Andy started his journey at the site in 1985 as an apprentice pipefitter and has since rotated through various roles, gaining valuable experience and building relationships that have lasted a lifetime. Today, he works as a job Leader, overseeing installations and ensuring the safe execution of projects across the 3,250-acre complex.

Andy’s long-standing career has undoubtedly inspired Mitchell, who developed a passion for engineering during his studies at Brockenhurst College. Choosing to pursue a three-year Advanced Maintenance Engineering Apprenticeship (Level 3) in Instrumentation, he will combine theoretical studies at Southampton College with practical experience at Fawley.

“This apprenticeship has opened the door to the chance of a long career with many opportunities, and I’m enjoying having hands-on experience and developing my skills just like my dad did before me,” said Mitchell.

“I will always carry with me his advice, which is: ‘If you work hard and give it your best, you’ll be heading in the right direction.’ It’s advice I think about every day, and I’m excited to now be putting it into practice.”

Reflecting on his career, Andy shared: “One of the proudest moments has been seeing my son Mitchell join the company. To Mitch and all new apprentices, I say: be kind, stay curious, and never hesitate to ask for help. ExxonMobil has a long-standing tradition of supporting its people, and if you put in the effort, it will carry you far. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Stay humble, stay hungry, and take pride in every step of your journey. The future is yours to build.”

The ExxonMobil Fawley apprenticeship scheme, which began in 1952, has graduated more than 200 apprentices since 2005, with over half continuing to work at the plant today.
