ExxonMobil in Mozambique selects EPC contractor for Rovuma LNG project

Area 4 partners have selected SMDC joint venture for their midstream engineering procurement and construction contract.
Contract supports development of onshore LNG facilities with planned capacity of 18.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas.
The Rovuma LNG project is expected to deliver approximately US$150 billion to the Government of Mozambique.

Maputo, Mozambique – ExxonMobil Moçambique, Limitada, on behalf of the Area 4 partners, (ENH, CNPC, ENI, KOGAS and XRG) has awarded letter of intent to the SMDC joint venture, comprising Saipem S.p.A, McDermott Energy Solutions (UK) Ltd., Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation, for limited engineering and procurement services (EPC) supporting Phase 1 of the Rovuma LNG midstream development.

This work supports continued project definition and planning activities as the Area 4 partners progress toward a final investment decision (FID) in 2026. The SMDC joint venture brings extensive global experience in the engineering, procurement, and construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities.

The Rovuma LNG Project onshore development is expected to include 12 modular liquefaction modules with total production capacity of 18.6 million tonnes of LNG per year, with start-up anticipated in 2031. The project represents one of the largest private investments in Mozambique’s history.

Johanna Boothey, ExxonMobil in Mozambique Lead Country Manager said: “The selection of our onshore EPC contractor is an important milestone advancing the Rovuma LNG project.”

“We will continue to work with the Government of Mozambique and our partners toward FID and to maximize the long-term benefits this project can deliver to the people of Mozambique,” Boothey added.

This project is expected to contribute approximately US$150 billion in revenues to the Government of Mozambique over its 30-year operating life. Additionally, the Rovuma LNG project, led by ExxonMobil in the capacity of Area 4 Delegated Operator, could add around US$11 billion annually to Mozambique’s Gross Domestic Product, and employ more than 150,000 people according to a macroeconomic study released by Standard Bank.
