From potential to power: Unlocking Indonesia’s energy future

Navigate to:

Indonesia needs energy - and a lot of it. With a population of more than 280 million, with both living standards and economic activity on the rise, demand for reliable, affordable energy is surging.

Per-capita energy use has jumped by nearly 40% since 2020, and ExxonMobil’s Global Outlook projects an 80% rise in total energy demand between 2020 and 2050 - well above the global average.

So, what is being done to meet Indonesia’s growing needs?

Strengthening energy resilience

As Indonesia grows, it must strengthen its energy resilience – optimizing existing assets and unlocking new growth opportunities.

We support the government’s focus on growing production by encouraging the use of new technology, increasing the reliability of operations, restoring idle wells and opening up new exploration bid rounds.

The renewed push to raise oil production towards one million barrels per day reflects the forward-thinking needed to meet rising energy demand. It also reinforces the importance of energy resilience, as outlined in the President’s Asta Cita Indonesia vision.

Starting from a position of confidence

Indonesia has a wealth of energy resources - from world‑class producing fields, like Banyu Urip, to promising exploration prospects. With about two‑thirds of its 128 basins still unexplored, Indonesia has the potential to be a regional energy supplier for decades.

Unlocking this potential will require pragmatic approaches that combine advanced technology, sustained investment, and close collaboration between industry and government. Equally important are stable regulatory and fiscal frameworks. When investors can plan with confidence - across both mature fields and frontier areas - Indonesia can fully capture the benefits of world class energy development.

Cepu Block: A model of what’s possible

For over two decades, our collaboration with government and industry partners at the Cepu Block has delivered economic, social, and community benefits while boosting energy supplies. It has been one of the country’s most successful energy developments - and its contribution continues to grow.

At the Cepu Block’s Banyu Urip field, our Indonesian engineers and geoscientists have applied first‑of‑their‑kind technologies to boost production and unlock more of the nation’s potential. Recently, through the accelerated Banyu Urip infill clastic drilling program, we brought new wells online nearly a year ahead of schedule. These wells increased production and supported Indonesia in meeting its 2025 national production target.

Our Cepu Block success proves that low‑cost, high‑margin oil production is still achievable in Indonesia, thanks to advanced reservoir management, innovative technologies, execution excellence and close collaboration with government and local communities.

Making headway

Cepu Block’s story is far from over. Significant untapped potential remains to be unlocked.

We believe Indonesia can build a stronger, more resilient energy future. By working together and fully unlocking it resources and talent, we can create real energy security and long-term sustainable growth.
