ExxonMobil Advances $100M STEM Investment in Guyana

Exceptional STEM education starts with exceptional teachers.

ExxonMobil Guyana launched the Guyana STEM Teacher Training: Enhancing Learning, Leadership and Academic Rigour (STELLAR) program, marking the next step in the company's US$100 million, 10-year investment to strengthen STEM education across the country.

Beginning in August 2026, 60 pre-service secondary school educators will receive specialized mathematics and science training through the Cyril Potter College of Education. Over the next two years, participants will build STEM expertise, evidence-based teaching practices and leadership skills to help create engaging, high-quality learning experiences for students. A second cohort of teachers will begin the program in August 2027, expanding the program’s reach and impact.

The STELLAR Program is the first component of the Guyana STEM Initiative, which is built on three pillars: teacher training, student opportunities and career pathways.

The broader initiative also includes STEM Centers developed by the Guyanese subsidiary of the ExxonMobil Foundation (ExxonMobil Foundation Guyana) that will provide hands-on learning opportunities for students, with the first center expected to open in Georgetown in 2029. These centers will be modeled after the ExxonMobil Foundation's Teen Engineering and Tech Centers (TETCs), building on lessons learned and proven approaches developed through the Foundation's work creating immersive STEM learning experiences for young people.

Together, STELLAR and the future STEM Centers in Guyana will create a comprehensive approach to STEM education, supporting both the educators who teach STEM and the hands-on environments where students can explore it.
