Partnership with QatarEnergy

Our business efforts in the LNG industry in Qatar focus on supporting the delivery of reliable and efficient energy solutions that meet local and global demand.

Through our partnership with QatarEnergy, we’ve delivered LNG megaprojects that outperform competition.

Using cutting-edge technology and industry expertise, we continually optimize our operations to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable energy delivery and a strong business setup for long-term growth and superior results.

LNG ventures

For over 40 years, we’ve developed a strong and close partnership with the State of Qatar, grounded in cooperation, trust, and mutual respect.

As a partner in Qatar, we’re committed to building on the firm foundation of this relationship – through our business activities with QatarEnergy.

We’ve partnered with QatarEnergy to develop the North Field through joint ventures. We’re proud to be the largest QatarEnergy partner in the entire LNG value chain with interest in nine of 14 LNG trains in Qatar and 27 of the world’s largest LNG ships. We’ve also partnered with QatarEnergy on the South Hook LNG receiving terminal in Wales, the Golden Pass LNG export facility in the U.S., and Qatar’s largest condensate refinery.

It was an honor to be a shareholder in QatarEnergy LNG N(1), formerly Qatargas 1, until full ownership by QatarEnergy in 2021. N(1) pioneered the LNG industry in Qatar – positioning it as the world’s largest LNG supplier and led to the growth of QatarEnergy LNG as a world-class operator.

Domestic gas ventures

We’re proud to be the only foreign participant in domestic gas projects, Al-Khaleej Gas (AKG) and Barzan Gas.

Al-Khaleej Gas project (AKG)

ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy signed an agreement to launch the Al-Khaleej Gas project (AKG) in 2000. The project uses reserves from the North Field to supply gas to domestic consumers and was developed to meet the growing demand of local industries and further Qatar’s growth and development.

Barzan Gas

Barzan Gas project is yet another successful venture between QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil. It is a demonstration of bringing teamwork and technology together to support the economic growth and well-being of Qatar.

QatarEnergy LNG operates the Barzan Gas Plant on behalf of its shareholders, QatarEnergy (93%) and ExxonMobil (7%). The project provides gas to the domestic market in addition to associated products.

Other Ventures

ExxonMobil partners with QatarEnergy in one international LNG receiving terminal, South Hook terminal in Wales and one international LNG export facility, Golden Pass LNG.

Other international collaborations include ventures in Cyprus, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, and Egypt.

Our Joint Projects

Golden Pass LNG

Our work on Golden Pass LNG has been an exciting new development for our partnership with QatarEnergy. Working interests in the Golden Pass LNG export project are 70% QatarEnergy and 30% ExxonMobil.

Golden Pass is in Texas, and is an existing LNG facility – among the largest in the United States – with an existing pipeline system. The expansion of its current facilities, namely the Golden Pass LNG export project, will allow Golden Pass to export LNG to the rest of the world.

Construction on the project began in the first quarter of 2019 and the facility is expected to start up around year-end 2025.

North Field East (NFE)

In 2021, we signed an agreement with QatarEnergy to further develop Qatar’s North Field East project (NFE). This project will expand Qatar’s annual LNG capacity from 77 million tons to 110 million tons by 2026.

The planned NFE project includes four 8-MTA LNG trains with a combined nameplate capacity of 32 MTPA. The new QatarEnergy–ExxonMobil joint venture for the North Field East (NFE) project will own an interest equivalent to one of the four LNG trains. Under the terms of the agreement, QatarEnergy holds a 75% interest, while ExxonMobil holds the remaining 25%. Consequently, ExxonMobil will have a 6.25% stake in the overall NFE project.

ExxonMobil capabilities

We invest in new technology and explore solutions through research and development (R&D) to boost our skills and reduce environmental impact.

Our sustained investment in R&D is important in positioning us to develop breakthrough solutions in areas such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), biofuels, hydrogen, and energy-efficient process technology.

We're pursuing more than $20 billion in lower-emission investments from 2022 through 2027.

We’re a leader in CCS, responsible for 40% of all the CO2 ever captured and the first company in the world to capture more than 120 million tons of CO2 – equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 25 million cars.

In February 2021, we announced the creation of a new business – ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions – to commercialize and deploy emission-reduction technologies. It will initially focus on carbon capture and storage, one of the critical technologies required to achieve net zero emissions and the climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.

We’re also partners in several existing joint ventures with QatarEnergy that operates a CCS project with an annual capacity of 2.2 million tons at Ras Laffan.
