Supporting the community in Malaysia

The ExxonMobil subsidiaries in Malaysia have a long tradition of helping to improve the quality of life in the communities in which it operates.

In its early years, the company’s community efforts were centered mainly on education. As community needs and priorities evolved, these programs expanded around four key corporate responsibility pillars that set a strong foundation for the country’s future – human capital development, health and safety, energy literacy and corporate governance.

By prioritizing long term benefits, we partner with communities to strengthen local capacity and support responsible, sustainable development that delivers meaningful, lasting impact.

Strategic community investments

STEM education programs

In the area of human capital development, we are helping to build the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through our support for various student programs that encourage STEM excellence. We focus on initiatives that help identify future STEM talents and to motivate young people to consider future careers in these fields which are critical for Malaysia in achieving its developmental goals. STEM teachers also benefit from teacher training workshops aimed at strengthening and rejuvenating STEM education in school.

English language programs

We have made significant contributions to enhance English language proficiency among school children through various activities and helped establish three English resource centers in Terengganu.

Entrepreneurial skills development

In partnership with Yayasan DiRaja Sultan Mizan Terengganu, we have sponsored an entrepreneurial skills development project for single mothers and girls from low-income families to help women fulfill their economic potential and lead economic and social change in their communities.

Volunteerism

We foster a culture of volunteerism that encourages employees to give their time and talents in support of community needs. In Malaysia, ExxonMobil employees work closely with local organizations and community partners to support educational and environmental initiatives, helping make a positive difference in the communities where they live and work.

ExxonMobil Young Engineer Program

Our employees run a STEM program for secondary school students in the Klang Valley and in Terengganu state to help promote interest in future careers in these fields. Through fun, hands-on experiments and our employees’ sharing of career experiences, students also gain insights into future opportunities in the energy industry.

Leaf-a-Legacy reforestation program

Our volunteers have supported the regeneration of a forest in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. Partnering with a local conservation group, they helped replant rainforest saplings at the Bukit Kiara Federal Park to protect its biodiversity. The park, one of Kuala Lumpur’s significant remaining ‘green lungs’, is also home to unique wildlife and several endangered species.
