Longford Quarterly Update - September 2025

Longford Plants Manager Clinton Gentle shares how Esso Australia is maintaining the reliable flow of Gippsland gas, while engaging with our neighbours and continuing decommissioning efforts in the Gippsland Basin.

Keeping Gippsland gas flowing reliably all year round

Longford Plants Manager Clinton Gentle

Another cold winter has passed supported by Longford Plants gas production. We remain the major producer serving Southern Australia’s gas needs with over 50% of gas consumed in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania supplied from right here in Gippsland. I would like to thank the extended Longford team for their tireless efforts keeping the gas flowing safely and reliably to more than 88% of Victorian homes this winter.

Longford Plants is part of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture, a 50/50 joint venture between Esso and Woodside. We recently announced that we have signed an agreement to transfer operatorship of the Bass Strait petroleum production assets and associated facilities from Esso to Woodside. Both companies will remain 50% partners in the joint venture, however once approved, Woodside will begin to operate the facility.

After operating the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture for more than 50 years, we are proud to be handing over the reins to our valued partner. The vast majority of our Australian workforce currently supporting the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture will become Woodside employees once operatorship is transferred and we expect there to be minimal changes to the Longford team. Esso remains committed to providing a reliable supply of gas to our Australian customers and we look forward to working with Woodside as they continue to maximise the production of Gippsland gas.

We continue to prepare our offshore facilities which are no longer producing oil and gas for decommissioning. We are progressively decommissioning our facilities and have safely completed over $2.5 billion of early decommissioning works across our offshore operations, including the permanent plug & abandonment of more than 200 wells.

Our connection with the community remains a priority for us and throughout August, over 50 community members attended our community information sessions across the Gippsland region. In these sessions, we shared updates on the proposed transition of operatorship to Woodside Energy in addition to the latest information about our decommissioning program, with a focus on our ongoing use of Barry Beach Marine Terminal.

Barry Beach Marine Terminal has supported our offshore operations as part of South Gippsland’s industrial precinct for over five decades. Many of our Gippsland Basin offshore platforms were constructed at the terminal and, as part of our decommissioning program, this is where they will return to be safely dismantled and sent offsite for recycling and disposal.

Our ongoing work with local community organisations goes from strength to strength. I recently had the opportunity to attend Ramayhuck District Aboriginal Corporation’s NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony. It was great to be a part of such an important cultural experience, as well as to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

In exciting news, Esso Australia will once again be a major sponsor of this year’s Sale Show, an important event on the Sale community’s calendar. Visitors to our stand will have an opportunity to chat with our representatives and pick up some Esso merchandise. We’re also proud to sponsor this year’s Monster Truck show, which promises to be even more thrilling in 2025!
