Expat Postcards:  A message from Singapore!

Deri Irawan is currently on assignment in Singapore as an LNG Business Development Executive.

What has been the best thing about your assignment so far?

Although I’m based in Singapore, I spend a lot of time travelling and developing new LNG markets in Africa. This is a geography I haven’t had much opportunity to work in, having spent more time in Europe, US, and Middle East, so learning about the cultures and history of Africa has been fascinating.

What is something you miss from home?

First and foremost is family, especially as they have stayed at home in Australia while I am on assignment in Singapore. When I’m home, I spend time with family, especially my fur babies (two resident dogs and six to eight foster cats at any given time). We also try and travel to local spots to explore Australia. As a foodie, one item that I cannot seem to find anywhere else in the world is Smiths’ chicken-flavoured potato chips. Are these only sold in Australia?

Name one thing that has surprised you about your current location?

I found the localisation of fast food chains in Singapore surprising. You can get a Nasi Lemak or a Prosperity burger at McDonalds and Guzman y Gomez now has a Chicken Rendang burrito.  I have yet to try these however I recently discovered Shiok Mala chicken burgers are possibly better than a Chick Fil-A sandwich. I like spice and was surprised to find that Pepe Ayam does a Level 27 flavor, with a polaroid wall honouring everyone who has finished the meal in less than five minutes). I will be sure to give it a go before my assignment ends.

What have you learned about the local culture?

I’ve always loved street food and Singapore has some hidden gems. I’m currently into kaya (coconut jam) toast, half-boiled egg and Yuen Yang (which is a drink mix between iced coffee and tea). It started out as simply ordering something on the menu I didn’t recognise, plus I couldn’t get my head around the different types of Singapore kopi (a colloquial phrase for coffee): Kopi (condensed milk), Kopi C (sugar and evaporated milk), Kopi O kosong (black), Kopi gu yu (butter)… list goes on…

Would you recommend this destination as a place to visit?
Singapore is a great place to visit, especially as a gateway to Asia. It’s a great introduction to the food, air-conditioned malls, warm beaches, and tropical parks. If you like what you see and want to get adventurous, the next destination is only a short direct flight away.
