A local farmer based in Agnes, Victoria, recently purchased 20 floats and a gangway from Esso Australia via Evolve Surplus, a company that specialises in reusing or repurposing dormant, used, or overstocked oil and gas materials.

The farmer has put the floats and gangway to good use by installing the items on a local dam which has now created floating access to the pump in his dam.

The collaboration between Esso Australia and Evolve Surplus is part of a waste reduction program to support the removal of old equipment from Barry Beach Marine Terminal (BBMT) to make way for assets from our Bass Strait decommissioning project.

Esso and Evolve worked together to develop opportunities to repurpose equipment in the local community surrounding Barry Beach which delivered environmental benefits, required no additional cost and avoided disposal to landfill.

In 2023, over 700 floats from BBMT were also donated for repurposing in Port Melbourne as part of the same program.

To date, the program has helped to divert a total of 254.2 metric tonnes of plastic waste from landfill including the donation of over 700 floats from BBMT in 2023 for repurposing in Port Melbourne.

“This is one of the many instances through our partnership with Evolve where we have been able to repurpose items we had previously sent to landfill or scrap. Not only does this deliver important benefits for the environment by reducing our waste sent to landfill but it has allowed us to capture value for the company through alternative reuse of unrequired materials and equipment,” commented Damian Kerr, Warehouse Analyst for Esso Australia.
