• Nov. 28, 2023Across Asia Pacific, ExxonMobil staff have volunteered their time to help improve the lives of people, the communities, and the environments around them.
As part of International Volunteer Day, we’re shining a light on the efforts of our people across the region, showcasing the many ways they’re making the world a little bit better every day.
Singapore
As we mark 130 years in Singapore, our staff carried out their usual volunteering through different hands-on efforts.
Driven by four key pillars – education, health, environment, and community – ExxonMobil Singapore staff have found a myriad of ways to lend a hand. From clearing the waterways in kayaks, to giving blood and distributing grocery bags to households, their efforts go a long way to make a positive difference in the community.
Indonesia
In Indonesia, we kicked off our annual volunteer program in earnest, helping the communities around our operations. Since last year, we’ve been cultivating the seeds for a better future, by helping to green the country and planting more than 1,000 trees, aiding local farmers to harvest crops, and also providing education opportunities by teaching young students English. Since 2006, we’ve volunteered over 25,000 hours to help our local communities.
We’re also helping to empower Indonesian women from underserved communities, giving them the ability to put greater economic control into their own hands. ExxonMobil has helped launch Weaving Hopes for the Future, a program that teaches women weaving and crocheting skills which they can use to craft and sell handmade products.
Malaysia
In Malaysia, we’re helping to build the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through our support for various student programs that encourage STEM excellence.
STEM teachers also benefit from teacher training workshops aimed at strengthening and rejuvenating STEM education in school.
Papua New Guinea
ExxonMobil PNG staff have formed a ‘Yellow Army’ of volunteers, donning yellow shirts as they lend a helping hand to communities across the country.
Staff gathered to paint the local community hall and primary school at the Papa Village, in Central Province, as well as clean the LeaLea beachfront, outside of Port Moresby, before donating the tools used for future community clean-up programs.
A similar initiative was carried out in the highlands’ Hela Province, cleaning the Komo Station.
Thailand
India
Volunteers from ExxonMobil’s India affiliates have joined hands with Agastya International Foundation’s team to help nurture India’s next generation of scientific thinkers.
The company is sponsoring Agastya’s innovative ‘Mobile Science Lab’ program, which provides hands-on scientific learning to 6- to 10-year-olds enrolled in public schools around Bengaluru’s outskirts.
This initiative will help around 16,000 students from disadvantaged backgrounds, as they get to touch, feel, learn and work with scientific objects they usually only read about, through interactive sessions and by carrying out their own science experiments.
Vietnam
Our support of Operation Smile Vietnam has helped 1,000 children born with facial deformities by providing surgery, as well as dental care to more than 10,000 children in Vietnam.
We’re also providing education across the country.
TFV has also provided training for over 300 teachers across 20 rural public schools in the Tay Ninh and Quang Nam provinces.
We’ve also consistently supported the VinaCapital Foundation, and through its healthcare initiatives over the last 12 years, have helped more than 2.5 million children and adults in Vietnam.
Hong Kong
Caring about the communities we operate in has always been a key priority for us in Hong Kong. We do it by serving the social needs of education and environmental protection through our staff’s skills and dedication.
Our staff have supported career seminars to help students better understand the working world and develop work-ready skills. They’ve volunteered as mentors to provide on-the-job training, nurturing students’ capabilities with hands-on, real-world learning experiences through job-shadow days. They also walked the talk to protect our environment by supporting NGOs such as A Plastic Ocean Foundation as volunteers to clean up beaches in Hong Kong.
