Forties Blend

Production and handling

Current Forties production is ~450 kbd, making it the largest crude oil stream in the UK. The most recent field is Buzzard which is pipelined from the Buzzard processing platform to the nearest point in the Forties System, approximately 28km away. Prior to the new field, production came mainly from the Forties, Brae, Miller, Arbroath, Balmoral, Scott, Nelson, Everest/Lomond, Brae East, Bruce, Tiffany, and Toni fields. Output is piped onshore at Cruden Bay, Scotland, and then transported by pipeline to Hound Point for loading. Typical cargo size is 600kb, with ExxonMobil marketing on average one cargo per month.

Load Port Data

The Hound Point terminal (56° 00' N, 03° 22' W) is a sea island in the Firth of Forth situated about 13 miles from Fairway Buoy. Size restrictions allow for up to 300,000 deadweight tons at jetty one and 150,000 dwt at jetty two, depending on seasonal tides. Storage is available for 4 million barrels of crude oil.

Typical characteristics

Forties is a high quality, light, low sulfur North Sea crude oil comparable to benchmark Brent Blend. It has a higher refining value than Brent, with higher naphtha/mogas yields and a lower resid fraction.

  • Gravity 39.1
  • Sulfur 0.82%
