Nayla Al-Naema, senior environmental advisor
Nayla specializes in biodiversity, using environmental DNA (eDNA) to uncover the diversity of species in ecosystems.

Nayla is a senior environmental advisor driven by a deep passion for making a difference. She works with a dedicated team of scientists and researchers at ExxonMobil Research Qatar (EMRQ), who are exploring innovative ways to address environmental challenges and create a sustainable future.

“My love for science wasn’t just about curiosity—it was about making a real impact. I wanted to solve problems, help people and leave the world better than I found it. That has guided me every step of the way.”

Nayla’s work focuses on biodiversity. Using tools like environmental DNA (eDNA), she and her team study the diversity of species in ecosystems. This is a relatively new scientific tool that can help uncover the hidden connections in ecosystems, providing insights for better monitoring systems and conservation strategies that can help protect and enhance biodiversity.

But her work isn’t just about science - it’s about people and the planet. Her goal is clear: to create a better world for the generations to come. “We’re here to protect the unique environment around us and build a more resilient planet,” she says.

“From as far back as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by exploring and understanding the world around me. Science always felt like magic to me - real, powerful and full of possibilities. Even as a child, I knew I wanted to be a scientist.”

What sets Nayla apart is the inspiration she brings to others, especially young girls and women aspiring to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). By leading with purpose and determination, she shows that women can be effective change-makers, solving global challenges with creativity and courage.

“To any young girl thinking about a career in science: don’t let fear or doubt stop you. Science needs your ideas and your passion. You have the power to shape the future. Believe in yourself, stay curious and be confident.”

Alongside the efforts that Nayla leads at EMRQ, she also collaborates with other valued partners like QatarEnergy, QatarEnergy LNG, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Qatar Science and Technology Park. These partnerships are important, as they enhance knowledge sharing within the scientific community. Together, they drive initiatives that align with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the shared vision of a sustainable future.

Nayla is proving that through innovation, science and teamwork, positive change is possible. Her commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future inspires an enthusiasm for science in girls, women and everyone around her.
