Let’s deliver industry
with low emissions

Supporting society's net-zero ambitions

Advances in technology are required to get the world to net zero. Society must progress new technologies that tackle major parts of the economy that support modern ways of living, while also helping to reduce emissions.

We can help deliver industrial solutions to reduce emissions in certain industries, such as heavy-duty transportation, cement and steel manufacturing. Explore our Advancing Climate Solutions report to learn more about how ExxonMobil is working to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from our operated assets, and how we are scaling up technologies like hydrogencarbon capture and storage and low-emission fuels with the goal of implementing at scale in other industries. Learn more about how we are delivering industrial solutions to help accelerate the world's path to net zero.

  • Policy is key in how industry can scale carbon capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage is one of the few proven technologies with the potential to significantly reduce emissions from certain hard-to-decarbonize sectors, such as manufacturing and heavy industry. However, new policies are needed to spur the investment required to deploy CCS at such a pace and scale.

  • Advocating for policy support to accelerate a net-zero future

We have consistently advocated for sound government policies like enhanced incentives for carbon capture and storage and hydrogen. We also support market-based, technology-neutral policies that recognize the value of addressing full life-cycle emissions versus focusing solely on Scope 3 emissions, thereby incentivizing companies to take actions that reduce emissions, while still meeting the world’s demand for essential energy and products.

  • Reducing emissions with a focus on Low Carbon Solutions

In the energy transition, all net-zero carbon scenarios require society to meet its energy demands with fewer, or even negative, emissions. That will take multiple low-carbon technologies deployed at scale. ExxonMobil plans to invest $17 billion through 2027 on initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations and deploy technologies we believe can have a significant impact in industries where reducing emissions is extremely difficult.

    Our capabilities

    • Carbon capture and storage

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a proven technology that can capture large volumes of CO2 emissions from industrial sources and store them underground, safely and permanently. With more than 30 years' experience, ExxonMobil is a global leader in CCS and we're advancing projects around the world to help us, and our customers, meet emissions-reduction goals.

    • Hydrogen

Hydrogen produces zero greenhouse gas emissions at its point of use. It's also versatile - suitable for power generation, trucking, and heat-intensive industries like steel and chemicals. We are scaling up production of low-carbon hydrogen to reduce CO2 emissions in our own facilities, and helping others to do the same.

    • Lithium

Lithium is a key component of electric vehicle batteries. To meet projected growth in EVs, the world will need a lot more lithium. ExxonMobil plans to become of leading supplier of lithium, using a modern process that has significantly less environmental impact than traditional mining.

    • Lower-emission fuels

Lower-emission fuels (LEF) made from renewable sources - like vegetable oils and agricultural waste - can reduce emissions from trucks and other forms of commercial transportation. We are leveraging our expertise in developing traditional transportation fuels to create lower-emission biofuels alternatives for our customers, whether they travel by land, sea or air.
