• Dec. 11, 2024The ProxximaTM systems scale-up has begun.
Nearly three years ago, ExxonMobil acquired a California company known for its revolutionary Nobel Prize-winning technology. By combining this technology with ExxonMobil’s proprietary technology and engineering expertise, the ProxximaTM systems venture was born.
So, what is ProxximaTM? Depends on what you need it to be!
Do you want to build a car? It can be a battery casing, chassis or grill. Are you in construction? It can replace steel rebar. Coatings? It cures faster and lasts longer than the competition. Subsea piping insulation? It has no depth limitation and is impenetrable to water.
This unique thermoset resin system – which is like a super strong, sticky glue – is made from two parts: a catalyst and a monomer. When mixed and cooled, they transform into a solid, durable material that cures rapidly, resists corrosion and works in extreme temperatures – even underwater. We can then tweak its shape and structure with different additives, making it perfect for various industries.
And get this – ProxximaTM systems stand out as the sustainable option, surpassing the competition.*
From the moment we source the materials to the point of sale, ProxximaTM systems have fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than traditional alternatives. Plus, in most cases, it extends the lifespan of the products it’s used in and is lighter to transport, which helps reduce both waste and emissions.
Our CEO, Darren Woods, projects the total addressable market for ProxximaTM systems to reach 5 million tons and $30 billion by 2030, with demand growing faster than GDP and returns exceeding 15%. Startups planned for 2025 will significantly expand ProxximaTM systems’ production.
Partnerships have formed in the rebar, wind and subsea insulation sectors. Automotive innovations are being tested domestically and overseas, and ProxximaTM systems are now used in seven ExxonMobil facilities worldwide, including Baytown and Beaumont.
With ProxximaTM systems now part of ExxonMobil, we can leverage industry knowledge and operations to scale globally. We’ve brought all this together, and we’re just starting to see how ProxximaTM systems can meet demand across multiple sectors – with more applications likely to come.
