Preserve local environment and biodiversity through volunteer efforts

At ExxonMobil, care is a core value. We are committed to contributing to the well-being of the communities and environments where we operate, working diligently to reduce the potential impact on ecosystems and preserve their value. In Hong Kong, we actively engage in volunteer work for environmental protection to reflect this core value.

On November 15, 28 volunteers from ExxonMobil Hong Kong (EMHK) participated in a grass-cutting activity organized by WWF-Hong Kong at the Mai Po Nature Reserve. They began by visiting the gei wai and fishponds within the reserve to learn about the wetland ecosystem and daily conservation work. After that they engaged in habitat management by removing overgrown vegetation. This activity helps protect our ecosystems by preventing terrestrial vegetation from encroaching upon wetland habitats, maintaining the area as a fertile feeding ground for migratory birds and creating an ideal habitat for wildlife. The harvested grass was fully utilized as feed for the buffaloes in the reserve.

Located in the northwestern corner of Hong Kong, the Mai Po wetlands are recognized as a Wetland of International Importance under the prestigious Ramsar Convention. Known as a "Bird Paradise", Mai Po Nature Reserve is a haven for tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds each year. The reserve’s five main habitats—gei wai, freshwater ponds, intertidal mudflats, mangroves, and reed beds—are home to a host of wildlife. "Mai Po is rich in biodiversity, making it a representative nature reserve in Hong Kong. We are pleased to collaborate with WWF-Hong Kong, which has managed the Mai Po Nature Reserve since 1983, to participate in this meaningful activity. This not only helps protect the valuable species and environment here but also promotes corporate social responsibility and our value of care,” said Tony Kwok, ExxonMobil’s Hong Kong & Macau Fuels Sales Director who led the volunteer activity.
