Impacts of the ExxonMobil Malaria Initiative
Malaria still takes the lives of more than 600,000 people each year1. And it robs the African continent of billions of dollars in lost productivity annually. As a major employer and investor in many malaria-endemic countries, ExxonMobil has witnessed the devastation of malaria firsthand. We’ve seen its impact on the lives of employees, their families and their communities. That’s why we are part of an international effort to prevent, treat and cure this deadly disease.
ExxonMobil has partnered with the world’s leading organizations that work on the frontlines in the fight against malaria.
Together, we are collaborating on three fronts.
- Invest to build capacity and support education about malaria.
We use vital information about prevention and treatment to help build capacity among health workers and inform policies to protect vulnerable communities. - Improve access to tools for prevention, diagnosis and elimination.
We provide families with the tools to prevent, diagnose and treat malaria, including insecticide-treated bed nets, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women, rapid diagnostic tests and antimalarial drugs. - Advance research and innovation.
We support cutting-edge research to inform the development of future malaria control tools and strategies at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health through the ExxonMobil Malaria Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Regina Rabinovich.
Successes in the fight against malaria
Since 2000, global efforts to control and eliminate malaria have brought down malaria mortality rates by 50 percent worldwide2. Through the combined power of institutions, individuals and the communities they represent, more people are receiving prevention and treatment tools than ever before. However, much work remains to sustain momentum toward the ultimate goal of ending malaria for good.
In partnership with various organizations, governments and institutions, ExxonMobil is proud to do its part in driving and maintaining these recent successes in the fight against malaria.
Between 2000 and 2020, ExxonMobil has committed more than $170 million in grants to the cause. Our support has allowed our partners to:
- Reach more than 175 million people throughout Africa and Asia with over 15 million bed nets, 5.6 million doses of antimalarial drugs and more than 4 million rapid-diagnostic kits
- Train over 1 million health care workers and counselors to help prevent, diagnose and treat malaria
- Hold more than 2.7 million community health sessions
- Provide technical assistance that leveraged $791 million in grants to Angola and Nigeria from the Global Fund — of which $218 million was dedicated specifically for malaria projects
- Support novel approaches to monitor resistance of current front-line antimalarial therapies and provide funding for the research and discovery of new treatments
