ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Tanzania Limited

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Tanzania Limited (EMEPTL) is a fully-owned subsidiary of ExxonMobil, with a 35 percent working interest in Block 2 Deep water prospect offshore southern Tanzania. Statoil Tanzania is the operator of the Block 2 prospect with a 65 percent interest. In July 2013 EMEPTL opened a branch office in Dar es Salaam and appointed Rolf Michael de Jong as Managing Director.

EMEPTL and its partner have completed four natural gas discoveries to-date, with a total resource in-place of 17-20 TCF. The discoveries are in a water depth of 2,500 metres.

If deemed feasible, the production of this gas project has potential to become part of an integrated development that includes gas production and processing, as well as liquefaction and storage facilities to provide a long-term supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to major markets in Asia as well as domestic market supply.

The Project will progress in a series of development phases. EMEPTL and its partner are currently in the first phase of identifying and verifying discoveries. Subsequent phases include initial facility planning and engineering, execution planning and detailed engineering design and finally facility construction and commissioning.

A final investment decision may occur in 2016-2017, with LNG plant startup likely to be 4 to 5 years after this decision.

Safety, health, socio-economics and the environment

ExxonMobil and Statoil seek to apply both Tanzanian and international best practices in anticipating, avoiding and mitigating effects on the people and environment that may be associated with the development. In particular, minimizing socio-economic and environmental impact will be considered with technical and economic factors in selecting a site for the LNG plant.

Corporate social responsibility

• Kickstart: In 2014, ExxonMobil continued its partnership with this social enterprise that specializes in distributing manual irrigation pumps to disadvantaged farmers in Africa. With our funding, pumps already have been delivered in Chad and Angola, and we plan to expand the program in 2014 to include Tanzania.
• Solar Sister: With ExxonMobil’s funding, this organization, based in Uganda, will continue to distribute solar lanterns to rural parts of Tanzania. The lanterns benefit rural women by increasing savings over traditional lamps, providing better light for children to study, and bolstering safety.
• Grassroot Soccer: Founded in 2002, this non-profit organization uses the convening power of soccer to conduct innovative public health campaigns and life skills training. In 2014, with ExxonMobil’s funding, the organization worked in Dar es Salaam and Iringa to improve the lives and health of Tanzanian young people.
• Anti-malaria programme:
  • Ongoing: $500,000 Malaria Vaccine Initiative’s Vaccine Advocacy Fellowships. Annual meeting in Dar of African researchers, ministry staff, health authorities to improve their communications and advocacy skills in discussing the need for a malaria vaccine.
  • Ongoing: $750,000 Seed Global Health, run by Dr Vanessa Kerry, places recent US graduates of medical, nursing and midwifery schools in Tanzanian hospitals and clinics to improve their clinical skills and build health infrastructure in country.
  • Ongoing: $150,000 Global Health Corps, run by Barbara Bush, pairs Tanzanian professionals with US counterparts to improve management of global health NGOs
  • Ongoing: Tanzania added to list of eligible countries of origin for applicants to Oxford’s ExxonMobil Global Health Scholarship
• Global Women in Management (GWIM): Since 2011, four women from Tanzania have graduated from the GWIM program, supported by the ExxonMobil Foundation. This is a month long workshop that strengthens the leadership, management and technical skills of women working in civil society or nonprofit organizations.
• Africa First Ladies Summit: ExxonMobil was the primary sponsor of the Summit held on July 1-2, 2013 in Dar es Salaam.
