ExxonMobil named best overall company in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
ExxonMobil affiliates in Nigeria have been voted the 2015 Best Company of the Year in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by the Social Enterprise Report and Awards (SERAs). The Company also received the awards for Best Company in Poverty Reduction and Best Company in Infrastructure Development.

Speaking at an event to hand over the top award to the Managing Director and Lead Country Manager of ExxonMobil affiliates in Nigeria, Mr. Nolan O’Neal, Ken Egbas, CEO of the SERAs, commended the company for its ethical integrity and adherence to the highest operational standards. He explained that the company received the Best Overall Company of The Year award for making the most significant contributions to the socioeconomic development of Nigeria in 2015, through its extensive CSR projects in the areas of education, health, economic empowerment and local capacity development. This is the first time in the history of the SERAs that an Oil and Gas company is receiving the Best Overall Company of the Year award.
ExxonMobil affiliates received the award for Best Company in Poverty Reduction for their Waste to Wealth Project, which empowers women in Yola, Adamawa State by teaching them how to convert polythene bags into sellable products like phone cases, mats and bags; as well as for its Oluponna Fish Farming Educational Resource Centre, which helped assimilate Niger Delta youths into a fish farming programme. The company also received the Best Company in Infrastructure Development award for the construction of hostel accommodation, lecture rooms and sports facilities at the Oluponna Fish Farming and Resource Centre in Osun-State and for providing infrastructure renovations to a several similar projects across Nigeria.
While accepting the award, Mr. O’Neal expressed the appreciation of the ExxonMobil affiliates to the organisers of the awards for the honour. In his words, “ExxonMobil and its affiliates are pleased to receive this award, but we are even happier to see the impact of our contributions to the nation. We are committed to the development of Nigeria and its people - Every year, we invest several million dollars on projects primarily in the areas of Health, Education, skill-set improvement and capacity development.”
Through its academic support and scholarship programs, ExxonMobil has invested over N8 billion in Nigeria’s educational system at all levels (primary, secondary and tertiary) since 2008. It has also contributed over N19 billion to the fight against malaria through intensive community outreach programs.
The SERAs – Nigeria CSR Awards is a popular and respected platform which recognizes Nigerian companies for their exceptional corporate citizenship and stakeholder engagements that create social value in the environment around which these companies operate. In addition to the SERAS award, ExxonMobil also received the Best Company in Local Content in Nigeria award from Businessday Newspaper last year.
