Esso reconstructs health care facility for Nanka community

The Ofu-Obi Comprehensive Health Center will ensure that residents benefit from quality health care after decades of deprivation. EEPNL is in production sharing contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and in co- venture with Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo).

EEPNL extensively reconstructed the abandoned facility after insufficient funds stalled work. According to Jide Ayo-Vaughan, EEPNL executive director and production general manager, “Our commitment to fully fund and equip the health center is strengthened by our findings that it will service several nearby communities and local government areas.

In addition to an outpatient department; consultation rooms; a laboratory; a theater; and male, female and children’s wards, EEPNL provided key equipment for the center, including an ambulance, two generators, a water treatment plant, computers and staff quarters. “The equipment is modern and state-of-the-art, benefiting a general hospital,” Ayo-Vaughan said.

The Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, CON officially presented the facility to the community at a ceremony attended by hundreds of residents. After an inspection, Obi commended EEPNL and its production partners for their investment. He was particularly impressed by the amenities provided and encouraged the community to make full use of the center.

As part of its sustainability plan, EEPNL and its partners entered into an agreement with an NGO, the Centre for Population Research and Development (CEPRED), to manage and deliver primary health care services through June 2013. CEPRED and the Nanka community will also determine the feasibility of affiliating the health center with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital and/or the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, identify programs to broaden the facility’s health care capabilities, and explore community health insurance options. EEPNL will completely hand over the project in June 2013.
