Response to fuel release at Mt Maunganui

On 27 April 2015, a sheen was observed on the water in the harbour at Mt Maunganui.

Mobil responded by immediately shutting down fuel bunker operations at the wharf. We have identified the source of the sheen as originating from the fuel pipeline. The pipeline will remain shut in until repairs can be carried out.

Choppy seas and windy conditions have assisted in dispersing the fuel sheen on the water. Our first priority is to contain any residual fuel oil on the water and work to clean up any impacts to the local environment.

We have been working with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council to respond. Boats are out today to assess the situation and respond as required.

Maritime NZ and Civil Defence have been notified in accordance with spill response protocols, and Mobil is cooperating fully with local authorities to assist with the response. The harbourmaster has the lead on the response efforts.

Mobil regrets that this event has occurred and will conduct a full investigation.

The community can contact Mobil’s community hotline during business hours on 0800 895 011.
