The World Bank has concluded education is a powerful driver of development and improved health, peace and stability. As a result, we award scholarships in developing nations and establish local partnerships with organizations that have close ties with a country’s educational system. The following examples are just three of many country-led education initiatives that ExxonMobil affiliates support.
ExxonMobil Egypt recently partnered with the Misr El-Kheir Foundation, a local NGO, and the Ministry of Education on a three-year initiative to create a new STEM education program at the Advanced Technical Industries School of Suez. The program’s goal is to create a higher-quality educational environment by enhancing teacher quality and providing a successful model of STEM education for schools.
ExxonMobil Egypt’s contribution helped with curricula development, capacity building of teachers and administrators in cooperation with training provided by the American University in Cairo, and funding for lab equipment. In the first academic year of the program (2013–2014), the school ranked first among vocational schools in Egypt, and of the 68 students enrolled in the program, nine won first place in the regional science competition and third place countrywide. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education plans to replicate the curricula in all vocational schools across Egypt.
The program is a real addition to us in the industrial education field and a breakthrough in the technical education field that Suez never experienced before.

STEM education in Qatar
In recent years, ExxonMobil Qatar has focused its community outreach programs on educational development in support of the Qatar National Vision 2030 which aims to propel Qatar forward by balancing economic growth with the well-being of people and natural resources. One such effort is ExxonMobil’s partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar and Qatar University’s National Center for Educator Development. Together we will host the fifth Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Doha.
The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is a week-long training program aimed at enhancing teachers’ understanding of math and science content, facilitating student learning through problem solving and inquiry, and equipping teachers with interactive learning tools to support differentiated instruction. Participating teachers are selected by Qatar University and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education based on their qualifications and commitment to participate in the Academy. As an expansion of the Academy, ExxonMobil Qatar’s partner – Teach for Qatar – also hand-selected ten teachers to attend for the first time in 2016.
Since it’s establishment in 2012, more than 210 of Qatar’s science and math teachers have benefited from the Academy. These teachers have gone on to affect more than 7,000 students in Qatar’s independent schools, deepening their knowledge of math and science and improving the education field.
The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy serves as a platform to engage educators in a professional development, and to equip them with the skills and confidence they need to motivate their students and encourage them to become active learners and pursue careers in math and science. The Academy highlights Qatar University’s ongoing mission to shape a cadre of excellent teachers and educators who work will help to advance the goals outlined in the National Vision and human development strategies.

ExxonMobil China affiliates partner with organizations such as Junior Achievement (JA) China to volunteer and organize events to educate children in local communities. In 2016, 25 volunteers from ExxonMobil China affiliates conducted a “Our New Sustainable City” workshop for 120 children of migrant workers at Shanghai’s Tangwan Primary School in Minhang district, located near ExxonMobil’s Shanghai Technology Center. The innovative curriculum on sustainable city development and energy efficiency helped spark curiosity about new subjects the children had little or no exposure to previously. ExxonMobil employee volunteers also went to a high school in Shanghai to deliver a “Success Skills” workshop, providing students with a valuable opportunity to reflect on their own strength and interests and contemplate their future career while developing their teamwork and leadership skills. In Guangzhou, university students were invited to ExxonMobil offices for a Job Shadow Day where students had the chance to shadow professionals and explore career opportunities and develop career-planning skills.
These programs are examples of how ExxonMobil and its affiliates continue our longstanding support of JA in multiple countries throughout the world.
We’re proud that 400 employees have donated more than 6,000 hours of volunteer service since 2010 to educate students who typically do not have access to such resources.
