Bonga is the largest deep-water project to commence production in Nigeria and is operated by Shell on behalf of NNPC and its co-venture partners (Shell 55%, Esso 20%, Total 12.5%, Agip 12.5%). Exports commenced in 4Q 2005 and production is ~150 kbd.
Bonga Terminal and SPM
The Bonga Single Point Mooring (Latitude 04° 33’ 45’’ North, Longitude 04° 37’ 28’’ East) buoy is located 1 mile from the Floating Production Storage and Offtake unit (FPSO), 50 nautical miles off the Nigerian coast (about 133 nautical miles from Lagos) in a water depth of ~1000 meters.
The FPSO consists of a large, barge shaped vessel, spread moored to 12 suction pile anchors in an orientation of 185 degrees. It has a storage capacity of 2 million barrels, a maximum loading rate of 47,000 barrels per hour and is designed to produce up to 225,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Normal cargo size will be 1 million barrels with a minimum cargo size of 300,000 barrels.
The approximate maximum dimensions for tankers loading at the Bonga Offshore Terminal SPM are as follows:
- Length overall 360 meters
- Bow to manifold 170 meters
- Beam 58 meters
- Draft 21.2 meters
- Summer DWT 350,000 tonnes
Tankers falling within the above parameters can be loaded at second load port. Tankers slightly outside the above parameters may be accepted at the discretion of the Terminal.
Bonga is a medium gravity, low sulphur, naphthenic crude. It is similar in quality and yield pattern to Forcados, though slightly heavier.
