Report Oct. 24, 2018
Our management approach is guided by an in-depth scientific understanding of the environmental impacts of our operations and a commitment to develop, maintain and operate projects using appropriate standards.
Report Oct. 24, 2018
Our Operations Integrity Management System is the framework that helps put our Corporate Environment Policy into action by establishing common worldwide expectations for addressing environmental risks. For additional information, see our Standards of Business Conduct and Environmental Aspects Guide.
We comply with all applicable regulatory requirements and, where there are none on a particular issue, we follow relevant risk-based standards that protect the environment.
Our Environmental Aspects Assessment process allows us to identify, assess, manage and monitor environmental and social risks throughout the life of our assets. Environmental Business Planning is undertaken to plan, oversee and steward environmental performance. New developments are typically subject to an Environmental, Socioeconomic and Health Impact Assessment process. Environmental, Socioeconomic and Health Management Plans are then developed to define the set of measures that will be employed during development and operations to avoid environmental and social risks, reduce them to acceptable levels or remedy the impacts. The graphic below illustrates the typical environmental management process across a project’s lifecycle to ensure we effectively understand potential impacts from our operations. We integrate stakeholder feedback, scientific understanding and other due diligence into these processes to ensure we operate in a safe, respectful and environmentally protective manner.
Performance and initiatives
As a show of commitment to environmental excellence, ExxonMobil Fuels and Lubricants Company has completed the formal International Organization for Standardization 14001 Environmental Management System certification process for our more than 20 lubricant plants worldwide. The International Organization for Standardization is an independent, nongovernmental international organization that brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market-relevant standards. The International Organization for Standardization 14000 family of standards provides practical tools for companies and organizations to manage their environmental responsibilities.
This certification process has involved ongoing rigorous on-site audits by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance experts who verify, among other things, the effectiveness of environmental impact assessment, program planning and execution, and performance monitoring processes that have been implemented through ExxonMobil’s Operations Integrity Management System. This certification process helps ensure that environmental impacts are controlled and minimized. A certification can also be a key factor in purchasing decisions made by customers.
