United Kingdom student opportunities

We offer students both apprenticeship and summer placement opportunities.

Summer placements

Our summer placements offer firsthand experience to learn how a leading engineering organisation works. A summer with ExxonMobil will introduce you to numerous opportunities, including:

  • Work with a group of students on real company projects to develop solutions and make recommendations.
  • Interact with a variety of disciplines and levels of the organisation.
  • Receive professional mentoring while you develop your project management, analytical, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Potential to join the company on a full time basis.

What to expect in a summer placement

Placements commence in July of each year and typically last eight weeks, while industrial placements can last approximately 13 months.

Summer placements are project-based, and will introduce students to real work the company is undertaking that is challenging, engaging and diverse. Recent projects have included initiatives on key energy variables, furnace monitoring, plant optimization and more.

What we look for in summer placements

For technical schemes, applications are welcomed from Chemical and Mechanical Engineers with a minimum 2:1. For commercial schemes, applications are accepted from a number of disciplines including Science, Engineering, English, Geography, History, IT or Business degrees with a 2:1 minimum.

We seek candidates with a strong academic background, analytical skills, ability to work in a team, a high level of personal ethics and the drive and desire to achieve.

We offer Advanced Level Apprenticeships at our Fawley Refinery; this exciting opportunity allows students to work within a fast-paced and varied engineering environment in one of Europe’s largest and most complex oil refineries.

Benefits of UK Apprenticeship

Our Maintenance Engineering Apprenticeship is a great start to your career and provides a wide range of opportunities. Through training and hands-on experience, you will open the door to potential permanent employment while developing knowledge and skills you can use for your entire career.

What to expect

Apprentices work 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday – Friday; 36 hours per week in the first year. Opportunities exist to undertake Apprenticeships in three trades:

  • Machinery Apprentices work in our workshops and throughout the site, installing pumps, compressors, turbines and machine components. Expand on your training in traditional engineering by using our cutting-edge technology.
  • For Electrical Apprentices, power is the key to everything at Fawley. Our site has its own power plant and uses as much electricity as the whole of Southampton. Develop skills working on a variety of equipment, from low-voltage alarm systems up to 11,000 volt motors. You’ll gain knowledge of substations, plant areas, switch gears and all the ins and outs of alarm and lighting circuits.
  • Instrument Apprentices work with ever-advancing instrument technology that is constantly moving forward to make our industry safer. Gain knowledge and experience with the latest automated instruments that help us maintain proper oil temperature, optimum pressure and the correct flow.

What we look for

5 GCSEs, grades A-C (achieved or predicted), including maths, English language and science (new grading structure for English language and maths should be minimum of Grade 4 or above).

Short-listed candidates will be invited to SETA (the Southampton Engineering Training Association) for aptitude tests.

Outside of academics, we look for candidates that have a hands-on approach and a practical mind; demonstration of practical skills or knowledge is an advantage. Candidates should also have the enthusiasm and determination to succeed, an inquiring mind, and the self-motivation to ensure college deadlines are met. If you enjoy working outside and getting your hands dirty but want to continue your education, then this could be the career for you.

Training to be provided

Year 1 will be full time at SETA working towards an Intermediate Apprenticeship including NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and functional skills (if required), plus study towards a technical Certificate. For years 2 and 3, you will be based at the Fawley Refinery working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship including NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Engineering.
