Environmental leadership
Rovuma LNG: Innovative lower-carbon LNG
Rovuma LNG is designed to achieve industry-leading Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity compared to traditional large train design. With no upstream emissions associated with the subsea development and exceptionally low native CO2 in feed gas, the project leverages electric motor-driven compressors, combined-cycle power plant efficiency, and adsorption-based pre-treatment to minimize energy use.
Zero routine flaring and advanced enclosed ground flare systems further reduce environmental impact.
Built with the aim of achieving a lower emissions future
The Rovuma LNG design enables multiple potential pathways to a lower emissions future. Electrical systems are ready for renewable power integration, and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is embedded in the design with space reserved for future CO2 compression facilities.
Offshore sequestration sites have been preliminarily identified, presenting potential long-term flexibility for evolving energy solutions.

During the project pause, the RLNG Phase 1 concept was refreshed to enhance delivery of a world-scale LNG development in an evolving energy space. Innovation is central to this approach, enabling technical excellence and cost efficiency.
High-efficiency power integration
The Rovuma LNG project incorporates an 800 MW combined cycle power plant to supply electricity for LNG compressor and driver units. This design reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional large-train configuration and optimizes natural gas utilization.
Advanced liquefaction technology
After inlet facilities remove condensate and liquids from wellhead gas, liquefaction modules cool methane to -161 °C for storage and marine transport. The facility includes 2 x 9.3 MTA LNG trains, composed of 12 pre-assembled 1.55 MTA eLNG units, leveraging Chart's Integrated Pre-Cooled Single Mixed Refrigerant (IPSMR®) process for superior efficiency and emissions performance.
Modular design and fabrication for flexibility and risk reduction
Most modules will be fabricated off-site and assembled on location, minimizing upfront costs and execution risk. This modular approach enhances scalability, resource flexibility, and resilience against market volatility and site security challenges. It also supports full-field development and maintains joint development opportunities for future phases.
Financial and strategic advantages
The design meets lender requirements, positioning the project for multiple potential pathways to a lower emissions future and long-term value creation. The initial 18.6 MTA capacity delivers economies of scale, accelerates cash flows, and supports disciplined capital allocation.

Biodiversity
Rovuma LNG’s Biodiversity Strategy forms part of Rovuma LNG’s Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for the Project. The principal objective of the ESMP is to facilitate the avoidance, reduction, and mitigation of environmental, social, and community health risks and impacts associated with the construction phase of the Project.
The Project takes place in a biodiversity-rich area, both onshore and offshore. Several protected areas and other internationally recognized areas for biodiversity are present in the project landscape/seascape which highlights this biodiversity richness.
The overarching biodiversity goal of the Project is to conserve biodiversity locally and regionally, focusing on sensitive ecosystems, habitats, and species potentially affected by Project activities. To achieve this, the Project has defined a set of biodiversity objectives that translate its conservation commitments into measurable and actionable outcomes.

Biodiversity stakeholder engagement
Integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into stakeholder engagement is essential for understanding a project’s potential impacts, risks, and dependencies on biodiversity, as well as for identifying opportunities to avoid, minimize, and manage biodiversity-related issues in ways that are responsive to stakeholder priorities. Effective stakeholder engagement enables the incorporation of local and traditional knowledge and experience, which can provide critical information on the use of natural resources, including fishing, hunting, grazing, and the collection of plants for medicinal, cultural, or subsistence purposes. Stakeholders can also offer valuable contextual insight into historical ecosystem conditions, ecological change over time, and existing or emerging threats to species and habitats.
