Marine Well Containment System

Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) is an independent company with headquarters in Houston. The company, which is not in the business of making a profit, provides well containment equipment and technology in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

As a leader in deepwater well containment in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the company is committed to being continuously ready to respond to a deepwater well control incident in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

MWCC has enhanced industry containment capabilities with the development of an interim containment system (ICS) available for use in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The ICS can handle pressure up to 15k psi. The capping stack, the centerpiece of the system, can cap a well in deepwater depths up to 10,000 feet. It is engineered to cap and flow a well in deepwater depths up to 8,000 feet. The system has the capacity to contain 60,000 barrels per day (and 120 million standard cubic feet per day) with potential for expansion. MWCC worked with regulators from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) when designing the system to ensure all expectations were met and that the new system would not only safeguard the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, but allow new permits to be issued.

ExxonMobil, in partnership with Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Shell, continues to lead the development of additional system components to expand the initial system's capabilities, with completion of the expanded system set for 2013. The system is being engineered for use in deepwater depths up to 10,000 feet and has the capacity to contain up to 100,000 barrels of liquid per day (and handle up to 200 million cubic feet per day of gas).

MWCC is available to all deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico operators as a member or on a non-member (per well) basis. Members have access to containment services for a response to a potential well control event of an existing well; non-members have access only for a specific well over a defined time period.

MWCC has 10 member companies. In addition to ExxonMobil, current members include: Anadarko, Apache, BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Hess, Shell and Statoil. For more information on the Marine Well Containment Company, please click here.
