U.S. refining overview

ExxonMobil is the world’s largest refiner, with facilities located in major markets around the globe. Across the United States, we operate five safe, reliable and efficient refineries.

Our facilities convert crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, motor oil and petrochemical feedstocks that are used in medical equipment, electronics, clothing, vitamin capsules, tires and many other products.

ExxonMobil has more than 100 years of experience in the refining industry. At our refining facilities, product upgrading capacity and integration with chemical and lubricant operations provide significant significant flexibility to optimize operations and produce high-value products at lower costs.

ExxonMobil’s focus on technology helps us meet the world’s growing energy needs and sets us apart from the competition. For instance, our U.S. refineries were among the first to install wet gas scrubbers, a technology that removes particulates from air emission streams. This emission-reduction technology is now widely used at refineries worldwide.

All of our U.S. refining sites also use cogeneration, a significantly more efficient and environmentally friendly method of producing steam and electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

We are investing billions of dollars in refineries around the globe to increase low-sulfur diesel-fuel production. Two of these facilities, the Baytown and Baton Rouge refineries, are helping us increase the supply of cleaner-burning diesel here in the U.S.

But what truly sets us apart is our most valuable asset: our people. Nationwide, we owe our success to thousands of employees and contractors who support ExxonMobil’s operating facilities. These employees live, raise families, work, play and volunteer in the same communities that our refineries call home.

Our U.S. refineries not only bring jobs to these communities, but also spur economic growth and help meet America’s energy needs. Additionally, ExxonMobil pays billions of dollars in taxes every year, which contribute to important government services and programs.

We are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate. In recent years, ExxonMobil’s U.S. refining employees have volunteered more than 100,000 hours annually to local organizations. From establishing math and science education programs, to developing mentoring curriculums with students, to lending a hand during hurricane season, ExxonMobil employees give back where it matters the most – at the heart of our refinery communities.
