Speaking at recent interactive forums in Lagos and Eket organized to familiarize the new boss with the company's upstream workforce, McGrath stressed the need for workforce motivation as a strategy for achieving outstanding results.
He remarked that, "As a company that plans to outlive generations, ExxonMobil strives to build trust and collaboration amongst the workforce. We clearly understand that human resource is the most strategic tool for achieving critical organizational goals and results. This is the winning strategy."
Drawing an analogy with the family, he said: "We are a family and every member of the family deserves respect and should be treated well. I have strong respect for the union and come from a family of parents who were union leaders in Scotland, probably what we are enjoying today were made possible by the strong infusion of ideals by the unions."
Enumerating the success recorded by the team, the new boss said: "With the collaborative efforts of everyone, upstream Nigeria has recorded some great safety records with three Presidents SSHE awards, delivering strong in the execution of Erha North Phase II and restoring the Joint Venture business back to 350KBD gross with over 900 dives in very challenging conditions." He stated that business challenges are both external and internal and while some of the external challenges remain security, current low crude oil price, and funding issues, the internal includes risk associated with ageing assets, effective and sustainable controls and organizational efficiencies.
"Our newly announced organizational changes are to enhance better structure and reduced span of control, thereby enhancing organizational effectiveness/capability across functional placements. Nigeria represents a great market for ExxonMobil, including Owowo, Bosi and significant gas resource base. We therefore have a 2017 focus to eliminate serious incidents, grow profitable volumes and improve overall profitability" he added.
Paul noted that "Nigerians are great people; the company desires to consolidate on building an open and trust oriented organization. There may be disagreement but a great workforce must be honest, direct and listen to each other, as no one has all the answers but in unison and through collaboration the team can build a strong organization that would be a model for other EM affiliates and other businesses."
