NNPC/MPN joint venture donates fishing gear to fishermen in Ibeno community

Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/MPN Joint Venture on Friday, February 19, 2016 donated 50 sets of fishing gear to the beneficiaries from the Ibeno Local Government Area. This donation ceremony was the second of its kind, and carried out as part of the company’s Special Community Assistance Projects (SPII). The first batch of 50 units was handed over on December 19, 2015, and brings the total number of donated items to 100 units.

The fishing gear, which was donated under the empowerment component of the Special Projects II for Ibeno Local Government Area included glass fibre boats, out-board boat engines, fishing nets and life jackets, and were presented at the Palace of the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno and Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Owong (Dr.) Effiong Archianga.

Presenting the items, the Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Joint Venture Operations, MPN, Regina Udobong, said that the donation was “another demonstration of the corporate commitment of MPN to the development of Akwa Ibom State, particularly through the provision of infrastructure, capacity building, empowerment initiatives and social amenities.”

Receiving the items, the Paramount Ruler of Ibeno, Owong (Dr.) Effiong Archianga, commended Mobil Producing Nigeria for its sustained demonstration of corporate social responsibility in its neighboring communities, particularly for the donation of the 100 sets of fishing gear to Ibeno Community. He assured that the fishing equipment would be put to the intended use and warned beneficiaries sternly against the sale of received items to third parties.

Till date, the Special Community Assistance Projects (SP II) in Akwa Ibom State have provided infrastructure, capacity building and empowerment projects to the tune of N1.3 billion for Ibeno, N1.1 billion for Eket, N 1.08 billion for Esit Eket, N900 million for Onna as MPN’s core neighbouring Communities, as well as the N250 million earmarked for each of MPN’s coastal communities of Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo and Mbo. This is exclusive of the recent provision of N8 million counterpart-funding for the dualization of Eket-Ibeno road.
