Production and handling
Terra Nova crude oil is produced by a joint venture between ExxonMobil (22%), PetroCanada, Husky Oil, NorskHydro, Murphy and others.
The Terra Nova oil field was developed using a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. This facility is a ship-shaped vessel with integrated oil storage from which oil is offloaded onto shuttle tankers.
Recoverable reserves are estimated at 370 million barrels from the Graben and East Flank and the Far East having the potential to add an additional 100 million barrels. Current production is ~50 kbd.
Load Port and shipping information
Terra Nova oil is produced from the Terra Nova FPSO. The FPSO is located 200 miles off the shores of Newfoundland. Three purpose-built 850,000 barrel Canadian flag tankers shuttle the crude oil to Newfoundland Transhipment Terminal (NTL) at Whiffen Head.
Newfoundland Transhipment Terminal
NTL is located on the eastern side of the head of Placentia Bay. The exact location is 47 Deg 46' 26"N and 54 Deg 00' 58" W. Mariners are referred to Canadian Hydrographic Chart No. 4839 - Head of Placentia Bay. Hibernia crude is also loaded from this terminal.
NTL loads up to 155 DWT Tankers. For more information on the transhipment terminal please visit the NTL website to learn more.
