Energy research efforts

Forming global partnerships underpins ExxonMobil’s approach to developing technology that enables innovative solutions.

In July 2012, approximately 20 top-level energy specialists from Scottish and German businesses and universities met in Edinburgh to discuss Europe’s energy challenges and strengthen ties between the two countries. The German delegation, which included Gernot Kalkoffen, the ExxonMobil Central Europe head, and Prime Minister David McAllister, leader of the state of Lower Saxony, focused on the characterization and modeling of geological reservoirs for hydrocarbon and renewable energy production and storage.

During the three-day visit, four of Europe’s top petroleum engineering and geoscience universities and the Energy Research Center of Lower Saxony signed a Memorandum of Understanding for up to a decade of joint research that will further enhance oil and gas recovery operations, safe waste disposal and optimized recovery of natural gas resources. The new collaboration will enable the exchange of academic materials and research data. In addition, the institutions will conduct joint research projects and teaching activities.
