ExxonMobil Qatar Inc. partnered with Qatar University (QU) and the Qatar Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Department in 2014 to support a national road safety initiative, contributing approximately $270,000 to the Qatar Road Safety Studies Center (QRSSC). Safety is a core value at ExxonMobil, and participating in this initiative demonstrates our steadfast commitment to ensuring a culture of continuous safety excellence.
“We are very pleased at ExxonMobil Qatar to partner with Qatar University and the Traffic Department on this important national initiative, which aims to better protect local residents. Both Qatar University and the Traffic Department share this value of ours, and this is a great opportunity for us to work together for the benefit of Qatar’s people”. – Alistair Routledge, president and general manager, ExxonMobil Qatar
In collaboration with the Traffic Department, ExxonMobil Qatar’s support is helping the QRSSC conduct research and analysis on road safety and providing a long-term vision for this issue in Qatar. This research is in direct alignment with Qatar’s National Road Safety Strategy 2013–2022.
As part of the two-year partnership, QRSSC is conducting several research projects, including an in-depth study of vehicle accidents, safety assessment of school buses, pedestrian traffic studies, traffic management and safety of Doha’s highways. Research is also focusing on predicting potentially hazardous road conditions that may occur over the next decade due to rapid growth. Based on the research findings, QRSSC will run road safety awareness campaigns throughout the country to share pertinent information with community members. Additionally, QRSSC researchers are being supported by senior students at QU, who will present research findings to the community.
“Road safety is an area of critical importance in a country that is experiencing such rapid development as Qatar. It is incumbent on us to collaborate with partners like ExxonMobil Qatar and the Traffic Department to find long-term solutions for this issue that stands at the heart of the welfare and safety of the people of Qatar.”
Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad, president, Qatar University
