Preserving natural resources

The Rainwater Harvesting Team at ExxonMobil Chemical Company’s Bangalore Research and Development Technology Center (BRDTC) is leading an effort to harvest rainwater at the site

With a rising population of more than 8.4 million people, Bangalore is facing an increasing demand for water. Bangalore’s rainy season generally lasts from April to November, with an average rainfall of about 85 centimeters (33.5 inches). The efforts of the Rainwater Harvesting Team have enabled the site to offset annual consumption by about 25 percent. At BRDTC, a system of rooftop channels and an uncovered open area are used to collect rainwater, which is filtered and fed into a main water storage tank. Surplus water that otherwise would be lost to runoff is rerouted to the ground through recharge systems to help maintain the water table. The water savings capacity continues to grow as harvest systems are included in all new expansion projects.
