Sponsorship of Angolan students

We work diligently and strategically to develop a national workforce and encourage local employees to achieve their full potential.

In 2012, 37 Angolan students graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s (SAIT) Oil and Gas Production programs for Operations and Maintenance Technicians. This training program is a partnership between Esso Angola, an affiliate of ExxonMobil, and the MacPhail School of Energy, located in Calgary, Canada.

To graduate from SAIT, all technicians must complete a comprehensive training program as part of Esso Angola’s approach to workforce nationalization. The Angolan Ambassador to Canada spoke at the SAIT graduation ceremony and emphasized the importance of this program in developing the human capabilities of Angola’s oil and gas industry. The 37 graduates are now back in Angola and starting their careers with Esso, working at one of the Block 15 production facilities offshore. The initial partnership with SAIT and Esso Angola began in 2001, with a class of approximately 100 students. In October 2012 another training group from Angola went to Calgary for training at SAIT. A third group is scheduled to start training in late 2013.
